Axtell Girls Win a Nailbiter against Washington County Tigers to Start TVL Tournament Play

The Lady Eagles and Lady Tigers played earlier in the season, and Axtell won 41-33 with a pull-away finish, Today was no different, with a final score of 47-43.

The first quarter ended with Axtell up 13-5 with the Lady Eagles in control of the paint. Even though the Eagles had more turnovers in the first quarter they took greater advantage of the steals they had and transitioned them into points. 

The half would end 21-17 with the Lady Tigers slowly catching up from behind with two threes in the second quarter coming from Anna Goeckel and Maggie Letjemeier. Tigers out-scoring the Eagles in the second 12-8. 

The game was deadlocked at 31-31 heading into the final quarter. The Tigers had yet another quarter where they outscored the Eagles, this time 14-10. McKenzie Baker got hot in the third quarter, scoring seven points and a three for Washington County. 

In the final quarter, it was back-and-forth between both teams with six total lead changes of the game’s eight lead changes. Axtell would find dominant scorers in the fourth, with Natalee Strathman scoring eight points and Maggie Strathman scoring four points. The game would end 47-43.

Axtell would finally out-rebound Washington County by the end of the game, but would still finish with more turnovers. However, Axtell had more points off steal transitions off great Players like Natalee Strathman who finished the day with fourteen total points. Maggie would end with ten total points, and Katelyn Detweiler would finish with nine and eleven rebounds. Washington County’s leading scorers would be McKenzie Baker and Anna Goeckel. Baker finished with fourteen and Goeckel would finish with eleven (STATS NOT APPROXIMATE)

Axtell is now 5-4 on the year while the Tigers drop to 4-6. Axtell will now play the Centralia Lady Panthers on Monday the 20th starting at 6:15 PM.
