Cobras Clinch Sectional Playoff Birth for Second Time Under Wick
By Jake Spalding

For the second time in 4 years the Jackson Heights Cobras will reach the Sectional round of the class 1A football playoffs following their 35-20 victory over Valley Heights. In a re-match from week 5, where Jackson Heights defeated Valley Heights 22-14, the Cobras kept the Mustangs at bay from beginning to end.

Jackson Heights got the scoring started on their first possession of the game. A 10 play, 50 yard drive was capped off with a 20 yard touchdown from Quarterback Cable Wareham to Tight End Joel Kennedy on 4th and 9. That would be the first of three touchdown passes for Wareham on the night, a career high. Cooper Williams kept his all state season going with 130 yards and 2 touchdowns on the night. Giving him now over 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns on his Junior campaign.

Valley Heights tried to take the momentum from Jackson Heights, taking advantage of some penalties on the Cobra defense and capitalizing with a Cole Coggins 1 yard touchdown run with only :08 seconds left in the first half bringing the 'Stangs with a score of 21-6 (2pt try failed). The score was Coggins' 20th rushing touchdown of the year. The Mustangs would receive the opening kickoff and in just 2 plays cover 57 yards capped with a 52 yard touchdown run by Trey Martin to bring them within a score of 21-12 (2pt try failed). That was the closest Valley Heights would get.

Jackson Heights would score on their next two offensive possessions to grab a 35-12 advantage heading into the 4th quarter. The Mustangs would get one final score late on a Cole Coggins 20 yards touchdown reception from backup quarterback Jackson O'Toole to bring the Mustangs within 35-20 before Jackson Heights ran the clock out.

Jackson Heights held Valley Heights under their total yardage average by 150 yards (only allowed 223 yards of total offense), forced 2 turnovers and relied on timely play calling and execution in the passing game to grab a convincing win over the Mustangs. The 5th ranked Jackson Heights Cobras (9-1) have now won 6 of last 8 meetings with Valley Heights and will move on to play at St. Mary's Colgan (8-2) in Pittsburgh next week.
