10 Area Teams Highlight Week 2 KBCA Rankings

The first full week of the 2018-19 high school basketball season came to a close Friday night and with that there has been a shakeup in this week’s edition of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings featuring 10 area teams.

There’s a new No. 1 in Class 3A as the Nemaha Central girls take over the top spot after a 3-0 start to the season. The Thunder opened up the year with a win over 1A-ranked Centralia, followed that up with a win over St. Mary’s and then took down the previous No. 1-ranked team in 3A Royal Valley Friday 71-52.

With the loss to Nemaha Central the Royal Valley girls dropped to No. 6 as they are off to a 1-1 start to the year.

Right behind the Panthers in the girls’ 3A rankings is Sabetha who is 2-1 on the season after suffering their first loss of the year Friday night to Jeff West 37-34.

The boys’ side of the 3A rankings continues to house two teams, as Sabetha remains at No. 4 after wins over Wamego and Jeff West last week while Maur Hill-Mount Academy has moved up two spots to No. 8 after an 87-29 blowout win over Horton Friday night.

Just the Jackson Heights girls and boys teams are ranked in Class 2A, as the Cobra girls are 3-0 and ranked sixth after wins over Horton and ACCHS last week while the boys are into the rankings for the first time also ranked sixth at 3-0.

The 1A rankings continue to hold the most area teams, with the girls rankings holding Frankfort at No. 3 and Centralia at No. 6. The Wildcats claimed the Wabaunsee Invitational with three wins last week to moved to 4-0, while the Panthers improved to 2-1 with a win over ranked Hanover Tuesday before blowing out Linn Friday 60-24.

A new team is into the 1A rankings on the boys’ side, as Washington County is ranked seventh this week off to a 4-0 start after big wins over Onaga and Wakefield last week.
