Hanover Girls and Boys Sweep Troy in First Games of 2019

In the opening games of the 2019 portion of the high school basketball season the Hanover girls and boys basketball teams showed why they are highly ranked across the state of Kansas with a sweep of Troy Friday night on the road as the girls won 68-26 and the boys 57-36.

GIRLS

The Hanover girls jumped out in front early and never trailed using a 13-1 third quarter to take down Troy 68-26.

The Lady Cats jumped out to a 10-point lead in first quarter about midway through thanks to 13 first quarter points from senior Macy Doebele, but Troy battled back and got the deficit down to six before Hanover ultimately took a 21-13 lead after one.

Hanover extended their lead to 14 points at the half behind 10 second quarter points from junior Tianna Lohse while also forcing seven Troy turnovers to lead 47-23 at intermission.

The Lady Cats put the game way with a 13-1 third quarter, while ultimately forcing a running clock in the fourth.

Hanover (6-1, 6-1 TVL) was led by Doebele’s 25 points and will next be in action Tuesday at Axtell, while Troy (0-6, 0-3) will have a road game at Onaga.

Troy: Avery Euler – 6, Holly Williams – 5, Lizzie Schultz – 5, Macy Norris – 5, Abby Parks – 3, Alyssa Schmille – 2.

BOYS

After Troy played well early, the Hanover boys ultimately found their stride in the fourth quarter to pick up a solid road win 57-36.

Niether team was able to get much going offesiviely in the first quarter and despite two highlight reel dunks from Hanover senior Thomas Atkins the Wildcats led just 9-8 after one.

Hanover pushed their lead to eight points at halftime, as senior Carter Bruna drilled two 3-pointers giving the Wildcats a 24-16 lead at the half.

The Wildcats pushed their lead to 37-27 heading into the fourth and then used a 20-9 fourth quarter and a 5-of-6 effort at the free throw line from Atkins to put the game away.

Hanover was led by Atkins who poured in a game-high 19 points, while Bruna chipped in 18 points on four 3-pointers.

The Wildcats (8-1, 7-0 TVL) will now travel to Axtell on Tuesday, while the Trojans (0-6, 0-3) will head to Onaga.
