For the 10th time in school history and just the first time since 1999 the Jackson Heights girls’ basketball team is head back to the Class 2A State Tournament after claiming the Valley Heights sub-state championship Saturday with a 56-39 win over ACCHS.

After an upset win over Valley Heights Friday night the Cobras wasted no time jumping out on top of the Tigers on Saturday, racing out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter behind 10 first quarter points from junior Abby Brey.

Jackson Heights then extended their lead to 15 points at halftime, 27-12, and kept their lead at 15 going into the fourth quarter.

The Cobras put the game away with a 14-12 fourth quarter, with junior Kylie Dohl scoring 10 of her 15 points in the fourth.

ACCHS ends their season with a third place finish in the Northeast Kansas League and an overall record of 16-7.

Brey led the Cobras with 20 points on four 3-pointers, as Jackson Heights heads to the state tournament where they have made it to the semifinals in 6-of-9 appearances.

The Cobras have won the state championship once in program history, which came back in 1976 in an undefeated season.

Jackson Heights (17-5) drew the sixth seed at state and will open up tournament play Thursday in Hays at Gross Memorial Coliseum going up against 3-seed Sterling (19-4) at 8:15 pm with live coverage on 103.9 KNZA.
