It’s been a debate for years on what to do with private high schools throughout the state of Kansas and Tuesday evening the Kansas State High School Activities Association voted against making any type of decision at the moment.

KSHSAA struck down a proposal Tuesday put forth by Paola principal Jeff Hines at the first Board of Directors meeting of the year in Topeka voting against Hines’ proposal of splitting private schools into a separate division by a vote of 43-21.

Along with the vote against private school separation, a new rule was approved by the board to change the rule on transfers throughout the state of Kansas from a transfer must sit out 18 weeks to now a student is required to sit out an entire year.

This is a major change from the current format which originally allowed a transfer student to play following the completion of one sports season.

The new will become effective at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.

On Tuesday the board also approved a proposal which allows Class 1A to go back to split divisions for basketball, volleyball and scholars bowl passing on a 41-26 vote.

Schools in Class 1A will now have a chance to vote on the proposed split and if approved by the majority it would become effective at the start of the 2020-21 school year.

Class 1A had originally been two divisions from 2011-18 and after the classification change a year ago the classification now houses 114 schools which is substantially more than any other classification.
