Marysville Sweeps Axtell to Open 2019-20 Basketball Season

The 2019-20 high school basketball season kicked off last night in Axtell with the Eagles hosting Marysville and it was the Bulldogs starting the season 1-0 in each game with convincing victories.

Girls: Marysville 49, Axtell 31

Marysville jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter behind four points from senior Sami Bartels and extended their lead to 26-11 at the half with Bartels scoring 10 in the first half.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach with a 15-8 third quarter and forced over 30 Axtell turnovers in the win.

While Bartels was great scoring 14 points to lead Marysville, it was sophomore Maddison Ronnebaum who turned heads with 10 points and several big rebounds in the middle.

Marysville starts the season 1-0 and will have a tough test once again Friday night hosting Sabetha with live coverage at mscsports.net while Axtell (0-1) will look to rebound against Wabaunsee Friday night.

Boys: Marysville 61, Axtell 43

Marysville led from start to finish getting up 10-7 after the first quarter and 24-16 at the half behind seven first half points from senior Matt Holle.

Axtell pulled within seven early in the fourth after the Bulldogs led by 13 after three, but Marysville’s Jackson Rader hit two three’s and scored eight points in the fourth to preserve the win.

The Eagles played well despite having just one practice before the game due to the football team playing in the state championship Saturday, but just ran out of steam in the fourth quarter.

The difference in the game came from the 3-point line as Marysville knocked down six treys in the game while Axtell committed 17 turnovers including five in the fourth quarter.

Marysville starts the season 1-0 and will have a tough test once again Friday night hosting Sabetha with live coverage at mscsports.net while Axtell (0-1) will look to rebound against Wabaunsee Friday night.
