Sacred Heart Girls finish third in D2 State Tournament

(KLZA)--  The Falls City Sacred Heart girls brought home the Class D-2 third place trophy from the Nebraska Girls State Tournament in Lincoln Saturday.

The 3rd ranked Irish defeated Loomis in the quarterfinal round game Thursday morning 53-27. Friday evening the Irish ran into the #4 ranked Wynot Blue Devils who beat Sacred Heart in the finals by a point in 2019. Wynot was crowned D2 State Champion Saturday evening.

After jumping to a 10-0 lead, the Blue Devils defense tightened the screws and fought back to gain a 37-27 victory.

Saturday morning the Irish played number 2 ranked Mullen and ran away with the victory 59-36.

Erison Vonderschmidt scored 25 points in the game to lead Sacred Heart. Vonderschmidt let the Irish with 44 points in the three games at State.

The Irish finish with a 26-4 record. They have finished third or better at the State Tournament for the past eight seasons.

Sterling lost in the first round of the D2 tournament to Humphry St. Francis 60-53. The Jets finished the season 20-8. St. Francis lost to Wynot in the championship game.
