Sabetha Volleyball Stays Unbeaten After Sweep of Nemaha Central

The Sabetha volleyball team played host to Nemaha Central Tuesday night in a pair of Big 7 League matches and the Lady Jays remained perfect on the year with a pair of victories over the visiting Thunder.

In the first match of the night Nemaha Central started strong jumping out to an 11-6 lead off a pair of kills from Addy Holthaus and Cassidy Corby.

Sabetha found their groove midway through the set and rattled off six of eight points to tie the set up at 13 before scoring five consecutive points to take control at 18-14 off kills from Leah Renyer and Melinna Schumann.

The Thunder kept it close and pulled within 18-17, but Sabetha finished off the set scoring seven of the final 10 points to take the set 25-20.

The second set was back-and-forth throughout after Sabetha took an initial 3-0 lead and from there neither team was able to put together more than two consecutive points.

Sabetha finally pulled away late scoring three consecutive points after the match was tied at 21 before winning the set 25-23 and the match.

After taking the hour break match No. 2 was even more thrilling than the first with Sabetha racing out to a 16-6 lead in the first set before winning 25-21.

The second set was back-and-forth throughout with Sabetha taking a 14-11 lead before Nemaha Central scored five of six points to tie the match up at 16.

From there Nemaha Central was able to put together three straight points late behind kills from Holthaus and Riley Rottinghaus to take the set 25-23 and force an all decisive third set.

With their perfect record on the line Sabetha raced out to a 5-2 advantage in the first set before Nemaha Central stormed back to take a 6-5 lead.

After that Sabetha slowly created distance leading 16-12 and 22-17 before finishing off the set 25-21 to complete the sweep and remain unbeaten.

With the two wins the No. 5-ranked Lady Jays are now 16-0 overall and 8-0 in Big 7 play and will next be in action at Holton Tuesday while Nemaha Central (9-5, 1-3) will compete at the Wamego Invitational on Saturday.
