The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors met Tuesday afternoon to discuss and vote on whether to allow student-athletes to have parents present at winter sports activities.

Paola’s Jeff Hines amended a motion set forth by the Board of Appeals stating that starting Thursday, December 10, winter sports participants would be allowed up to two parents/guardians per family to attend winter activities as allowed by local board of education or health department restrictions.

After much discussion and several other amendments that failed, the motion was passed by a vote of 54-24.

There was discussion on whether to allow parents immediately or not until after the first of the year, but none of those amendments passed.

Along with that there was also much discussion on whether to change the wording to two family member per family would be allowed to possibly help parents with children, but that was also shot down.

One of the final talking points were whether Thursday was too soon to allow parents to attend and there was an amendment put in place asking it to be pushed back to Monday to allow schools time to get policies put in place, but that amendment failed by vote.

So, starting Thursday, Dec. 10, interscholastic activities will allow for attendance of up to two parents/guardians per participant(s) family as allowed by local board of education or health department restrictions.
