For the third consecutive season the Sabetha girls’ basketball team claimed the Burlington Invitational as Saturday in the title game the Lady Jays took down an exceptionally good Rock Creek team 39-30.

In a low scoring affair the Lady Jays got off to a great start in the title game as seniors Leah Renyer and Nicole Stallbaumer each notched four points in the paint to give Sabetha a 10-6 lead after one.

In the second Stallbaumer scored four more points while Renyer added three free throws giving the Lady Jays a 19-14 lead at the half.

Sabetha then gave up just 14 more points the rest of the way holding Rock Creek to single digits in every quarter, while senior Melinna Schumann scored eight points in the second half to ice the game away.

Schumann finished a tie with Renyer with a team-high 12 points each, while Stallbaumer added nine.

Schumann was the leading scorer for Sabetha in the tournament as she scored 39 points in the three Sabetha wins, averaging 13 points per game while Renyer averaged 10 a game.

The tournament victory improves Sabetha’s record to 8-1 on the year as the Lady Jays hold on to the No. 6 ranking in Class 3A.
