Nemaha Central Sweeps Big 7 League Doubleheader Over Hiawatha

The Nemaha Central basketball teams played host to Hiawatha Tuesday night for a Big 7 League doubleheader and the Thunder picked up a sweep winning the girl’s game 47-27 and the boy’s 67-37.

GIRLS: Nemaha Central 47, Hiawatha 27

In a sloppy game throughout, Nemaha Central jumped out to an 8-1 lead early in the first quarter before Hiawatha responded with a 6-0 run to pull back within 8-7 after the first quarter.

The Thunder started to pull away in the second by forcing four turnovers and outscoring Hiawatha 14-5 to take a 22-12 lead at halftime behind five points from senior Cassidy Corby.

Corby continued her strong play into the third quarter with seven more points and despite six points from Hiawatha’s Sarah Madsen in the third, the Thunder led 29-20 going into the fourth.

In the fourth the Thunder put the game away with 6-of-9 shooting from the free throw line and ultimately overcame 17 turnovers in the game.

Corby led the way with 18 points for the Thunder who improved to 13-0 with the win while Ella Larkin added eight and Hannah Macke seven.

Hiawatha (7-4) was led by Clara Lindstrom who scored 14 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.

BOYS: Nemaha Central 67, Hiawatha 37

From start to finish Nemaha Central put together a dominant performance to ultimately win going away 67-37.

The Thunder raced out to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter behind 10 points from junior Marcus Beck while fellow junior Zac Kramer added six on 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line.

Nemaha Central ballooned their lead to 16 points going into halftime as Beck added five more points in the quarter to give the Thunder a 35-19 lead.

Kurtis Beck would get in on the action in the third quarter with eight points of his own, while Marcus capped off the third with a two-hand alley-oop slam in the final seconds of the quarter giving the Thunder a 57-32 lead before pushing the lead to 30 with a minute left in the game.

Marcus finished with a game-high 23 points in the win for the Thunder (10-3) while Kurt added 14 and Kramer 11.

Hiawatha (3-8) was led in the loss by Carson Gilbert who scored 11 points while Austin Coffelt added 10.
