Back on the diamond for the first time since winning back-to-back state championships the Sabetha Bluejays’ baseball team opened the 2021 season Monday night with a sweep of Pleasant Ridge 10-0 and 14-4.

In game one Sabetha raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI-single from Brycen Hartley and a 3-run home run by Tristan Wittwer.

The Bluejays had a chance to break the game open in the second inning loading the bases with nobody out, but Pleasant Ridge’s Nate Wilburn gave up just a sac fly to Drew Schmelzle and limited the damage to just one giving Sabetha a 5-0 lead after two.

After failing to score in the third Sabetha had another chance to break the game open with runners at first and second with nobody out but again got just one run on another RBI from Hartley.

Sabetha finally got the inning they were looking for in the fifth as the Bluejays ended the game with three runs on a bases loaded walk by Nic Niehus, an RBI single from Marcus Bauman and a two-RBI double from Kaleb Evans which ended the game.

Along with the game-ending hit Evans was also the winning pitcher for Sabetha as he went all five innings allowing just one hit while striking out 10.

Wittwer added a 2-for-3 day at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored while Niehus added a pair of runs scored.

In game two Sabetha used a 5-run fourth inning and 6-run sixth to earn the sweep while taking advantage of four Pleasant Ridge errors.

Cooper Bradbury and Josh Herrmann each collected three hits in the win while Herrmann, Evans, and Bradbury each collected three RBI.

The lone bright spot for Pleasant Ridge in game two came from Logan Beying who had three singles and two RBI.

Sabetha starts the year off 2-0 and will travel to Marysville on Thursday while Pleasant Ridge will look to pick up their first win Thursday as well.
