Regional baseball got underway Monday afternoon and after Mother Nature forced games to be moved around it was Valley Falls and Maur Hill-Mount Academy who won and stayed alive to play for a chance to go to state.

Game 1: Onaga 7, Doniphan West 5

The opening game of the day proved to be the closest with Onaga scoring four runs in the second inning and tacking on two more late to down Doniphan West 7-5.

The Buffaloes Colby Simkins was 2-for-3 with a walk, double, single and two runs scored while Zac Fisher added two hits and two RBIs along with Christian Henneberg who recorded three RBIs.

In the loss Lafe Blevins was on base three times and scored twice while Kole Franken and Trent Spiker each recorded hits and runs scored along with Kaleb Ridout who had two RBIs.

Game 2: MH-MA 10, McLouth 0

In a game that lasted just over an hour, Maur Hill freshman Cooper Pound tossed a two-hit, five inning shutout in a 10-0 win.

The Ravens plated two runs in the first inning on RBIs from Brady Pound and Mark Harris, then added three more runs in the second thanks to a pair of errors by the Bulldogs.

MH-MA would add two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and the final run in the fifth to force the run-rule.

Aaron Noll led the Raven offense with three hits and two runs scored while Drew Caudle scored three times and Kolbran Korbelik was on base three times as was Parrish Beagle.

Pound struck out seven in his five innings allowing just two hits and just one walk.

Game 3: MH-MA 14, Onaga 3

The regional semifinal was all Onaga early as the Buffaloes scored three runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI from Christian Henneberg and a two-run home run from Rilyn Mayginness.

MH-MA responded with two runs in the bottom of the first as Korbelik walked and scored on an error and Beagle knocked in Drew Caudle with an RBI triple.

The Ravens then held Onaga scoreless the rest of the way with Aaron Noll, Drew Caudle and Beagle combining on the mound with all three guys still available for Tuesday’s championship.

MH-MA took the lead in the second on a 2-run safety squeeze by Brady Pound and then scored 10 runs in the fifth inning with Drew Caudle hitting a walk-off 3-run home run.

Korbelik was on base three times and scored three runs while Noll added two hits and three runs, Caudle three runs, Pound two RBIs and a run scored, Christian Trevino two RBIs and Cooper Pound an RBI.

After the first inning Onaga was held without a hit the rest of the way and had just one baserunner in the final four innings.

Valley Falls Recap

After games were pushed back due to wet fields, Valley Falls got by Troy and Riverside to advance to the regional final against MH-MA.

Avery Gatzemeyer had two hits and four RBIs in the Dragons 8-0 win over Troy while Cooper Clark added two RBIs and Gage Burdiek two runs scored.

Trenton Kraxner also tossed all seven innings allowing just six hits while striking out 11 and walking none.

The Dragons then had to battle against Riverside and hold on for a 4-2 win, plating three runs in the first before the Cyclones got two in the third to make it 3-2.

Valley Falls tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and Burdiek along Brennan Miller combined on the mound.

Clark had two hits against Riverside along with two RBIs while Burdiek walked three times and Gatzemeyer on base three times.

This sets up the big rematch between Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Valley Falls in the regional championship game Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Valley Falls with live coverage on KAIR 93.7 FM.

The Ravens and Dragons split a doubleheader earlier this season and will both have their staff aces on the mound.
