Holton 48, Hiawatha 14

The first quarter was the story in week six as the Holton Wildcats celebrated homeocoming by jumping to a 28-0 first quarter lead before taking a 42-0 halftime advantage and improving to 6-0 on the season. Holton needed just 18 plays to score touchdowns on their first four offensive drives and added a pair of defensive scores as Jayden Fletcher and Lucas Adcock both registered a pick-six. The Wildcats also had 109 passing yards offensively in the first quarter including a 52-yard TD pass from Matt Lierz to Garyson Boooth and another 57 yard connection for those two that set up a short Booth TD run.

Hiawatha failed to pick up a first down on seven of their first nine possessions but got the only score of the third quarter on a 10-yard-pass from Brandt Barnhill to Ashton Rockey and won the second half 14-6 with a Tyler Davis one-yard TD run for the final score with 7:33 left in the game. The Redhawks tossed four interceptions total and had just 27 yards rushing on 31 carries while completing 13-25 passes for 162 yards.

Holton ran for 246 yards with Fletcher registering 66 yards to led the balanced attack that included more than 10 runningbacks with a carry and four different quarterbacks seeing varsity action. Caleb Hernandez added a rushing touchdown while Lierz opened the scoring with a 10-yard TD run before grabbing an interception and returning it 42 yards while also making a tackle for loss and completing a pair of long passes all in the first quarter. Lierz kicked all six extra points in the first half and just missed a 42-yard field goal late in the second period.

It was the first Big 7 loss for Hiawatha this year who is now 3-3 overall on the season and will host Royal Valley next week to clinch a playoff spot.  Holton will take a 6-0 record to Rock Creek next Friday in another Class 3A District 4 contest.
