Axtell Bounces Waverly to Advance to Sub-State

The Axtell Eagles advanced to the Sub-State round of the 8M-II playoffs with a 62-16 win at Waverly on Friday night. 

The Eagles scored 38 points in the first quarter and ended the game at halftime. 

Axtell's defense forced five turnovers and and turned all five of those extra possessions into touchdowns. 

The high powered offense of the Eagles continued to dominate as they outgained the Bulldogs 284-112, including a 167-52 advantage in rushing yards. 

Eagles quarterback Isaac Detweiler completed nine of 11 passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns. He added 80 yards rushing and another score. 

Grady Buessing was dominate on both sides of the ball as he finished with 5 catches for 69 yards and three touchdowns while also having an interception and fumble recovery on defense. 

Brandon Schmelzle added eight carries for 76 yards and three touchdowns. Waverly ended their season at 7-2 and will drop to the six-man level next season. 

Axtell improves to 11-0 and will travel to face #2 Thunder Ridge coming up this Friday night. 

The other half of the 8M-II Sub-State round will feature 10-1 Victoria traveling to take on 10-1 Wheatland/Grinnell.
