The 2021 portion of the high school basketball season ended Monday night with Valley Falls hosting Doniphan West for a pair of lopsided non-league games.

GIRLS

The girl’s game was not pretty by any means with both teams struggling with turnovers throughout before Doniphan West pulled away for a 57-34 victory.

The Mustangs started quick in the first quarter largely thanks to the shooting of senior Jaiden Taylor who poured in 14 points on four 3-pointers giving Doniphan West a 22-14 lead after one.

Both offenses were fairly stagnant in the second quarter, but Doniphan West was able to extend their lead to 10 at halftime with Taylor scoring 19 in the first half.

The third quarter is where the Mustangs took control outscoring Valley Falls 13-2 in the frame with junior Avery Weathersbee scoring seven in the quarter giving D-West a 47-26 lead going into the fourth before icing it away.

Taylor led the Mustangs (5-1) with a game-high 23 points while Weathersbee added 18.

Valley Falls (3-3) was led in scoring by sophomore Emma Montgomery who ended with eight points while Korie Kirkwood added six.

BOYS

Unlike the girl’s game the night cap was all Valley Falls from the start as the Dragons rolled to a 61-27 win.

The Dragons jumped out to a 14-8 lead after one with Zac Evans and Dylan Cervantez each notching six points in the quarter.

Valley Falls extended their lead to 11 points going into halftime with six different guys scoring in the second quarter which proved to be the story of the night.

The third quarter is when things got out of hand, as the Dragons outscored the Mustangs 23-3 to take a 31-point lead into the fourth which forced a running clock the rest of the way.

The Dragons (6-0) had eight guys score on the night with Avery Gatzemeyer leading the way with 15 points while Cervantez added 13 and Evans 12.

Doniphan West (2-4)  in the loss had Broc Leatherman score eight while Creighton Johnson added seven.

Both teams now take the holiday break and will get back in action after the first of the year.
